The Chemistry Department of DCT’s Vasantrao Dempo HSS of Arts, Science and Commerce, Cujira, organized an awareness programme on the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution” on 8th November 2025 in the School Lobby and AV Room as part of the school’s Golden Jubilee celebrations and World Environment Day activities.
Activities conducted were as follows:
1) Interclass cotton bag making competition
Participants: XI and XII Arts, Science and Commerce students
No of participants : 21
2) Inter school slogan writing Inter school slogan writing and recitation Competition
Following high schools participated
1. Auxilium High school
2. Dr K B Hedgewar High school
3. Fr. Angel High School
4. People’s High School
5 participants from each high school. Total number of participants:20, accompanied by a teacher
3) Inter-higher secondary “Waste to worth exhibit competition”
Following schools participated
1) Dr. K B Hedgewar HSS
2) Santacruz HSS
3) Mushtifund HSS
4) GVM’s Adarsh HSS
2 participants from each higher secondary school.
Total number of participants: 8, accompanied by a teacher.
4) Street play: शब्द तुमचे आवाज सगळ्यांचो

Participants: XII Science students
Total participants: 18
5) Talk by a resource person
Mr Sushant Figueiredo on the topic “Small changes big impact fighting plastic pollution” in the AV room.
Objective of the talk was to create awareness among students about the harmful effects of plastic and to encourage the use of eco-friendly alternatives.
Programme Details:
The event began with a Slogan Competition and Street Play presented by XI Sc students from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the school lobby. The performances effectively highlighted the need to reduce plastic usage and inspired everyone to adopt sustainable practices.
The Slogan competition was judged by Mrs.Tulsi Bhumkar and Mr. Siddesh Kundaikar.
Waste to worth competition exhibits were displayed in the chemistry lab by the students and was judged by Mrs Roselyn Luis and Mrs Kavita Borkar, a PTA member.
The cotton bags made by students were displayed in the chemistry lab and judged by Mrs Darshita Chari and Mrs Parveen Farooqui, a PTA member.
These events took place from 8.15am to 9.30am.
Refreshment was served to the participants, accompanying teachers and volunteers from 10.30 to 11 am.
Subsequent events followed in the AV Room at 11:00 am
A monologue was presented by Miss. Shridha Godkar, a student of class XI Science. She enacted the role of Mother Earth.
The Principal addressed the audience and welcomed the Guest Speaker and other notable invitees.
A speech was delivered by Mr. Rajendra Verlekar, PTA President.
The Guest speaker was introduced by Miss Rakhi Naik.
An inspiring talk was delivered by the resource person Mr. Sushant Figueiredo. He enlightened the audience about the environmental impact of plastic pollution and suggested practical ways to minimize plastic use in daily life. He also interacted with the audience and gave away some spot prizes.
The prizes were announced by Mrs. Priyanka Gaonkar.
The trophies and the certificates were awarded to the winners and the participants at the hands of the Principal, the Vice-Principal, the Guest Speaker, PTA President, PTA members and the Incharge teacher.
